Shade Yourself

Sunscreen is the most important must-have for summer and for all equestrians who spend many hours outside working in the barn and riding horses. Don’t kid yourself-no matter how much you love the sun it does not love you back! According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, 90% of all premature aging and skin cancers are caused by sun exposure so it is recommended you wear a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher every day.

Dermatologists suggest applying sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and be sure to completely rub it in, allowing the protective ingredients bind to your skin. It is also important to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours, no matter what SPF you are wearing. Look for broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against UVB and UVA rays and contain ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, Parasol 1789 and the newly FDA-approved Mexoryl.

One of the best sunscreens there is and one of my faves is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios collection, which contains Mexoryl, the most effective, FDA-approved, organic filter to protect against wrinkle-causing UVA rays. It gives your skin almost perfect protection from the sun. Available to purchase online at La Roche-Posay’s website (you can get to it by clicking here) or at
